Joseph Hanniken (1912-1998)

 

 

Played bugle in the marching band at Ans and became a military musician. Accepted as a bastuba player in the 9th Line in Brussels, he studied trumpet (N. Nicolai) and harmony and counterpoint (F. de Bourguignon) at the Municipal Academy of Music in Anderlecht. At the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles he won a first prize for counterpoint (1941, M. Poot) and fugue (1942, J. Absil). He then resumed his service with the 11th Line (1946) and became vice-master of the 5th Brigade (1946) and the 1st Guides (1949). As recently as 1949 he became deputy kapellmeister at the Music Chapel of the Navy (Ostend). He retired as captain in 1963. He also conducted the Fanfare Sinte-Cecilia van Leffinge and the Kon. Harmonie Ypriana of Ypres (1953-1963). He was president of the Music Association West Flanders (1955-1961). H. was also active as a composer. For wind orchestra he wrote o.m. the symphonic poems Vuurbol (1950) and De Ouwe Kapitän (1955), Scaldiana : de Schelde, levensader en Suite enfantine, awarded in 1952 with the second prize in a competition organised by the city of Liège i.s.m. Studio Liège. For symphony orchestra he composed his Second Suite, fourth prize in a SABAM competition, and a Symphony in three movements (1953), with which he won the provincial prize instrumental composition of West Flanders in 1957. Furthermore, his oeuvre consists of chamber music, piano music, songs and marches. He was also the founder of the Andel edition
